Unreal Engine 4
01 Mar 2025It’s always interesting to apply gaming technology to non-gaming applications. One of the first tastes I had of this was a meteorlogical POC for MetService NZ. The objective was to create an application to create weather presentations for news channels based off real meteorlogical data. To do this, we made use of the Cesium plugin that gave us 3D visualizations of cities and terrain all over the world, as well as Unreal’s native point-cloud system to generate technically-accurate clouds.
As an interview test for that job, I was asked to create simple demo. This was likely their sneaky way of getting me to learn the engine. Nevertheless, it was an interesting experience, and Stair Dismount won me the job.
Another instance of applying Unreal to a non-gaming application was for Vantari VR. They developed a VR training simulator utilising the Meta Quest headsets to train doctors and nurses on medical procedures. During this time, I implemented a handpose system, a sterility system, an in-app debug tablet, and various different medical instruments.
